The Loon Straits Soap Company Helps Heals Lake Winnipeg With Each Bar of Soap Sold

Sharon Monkman started The Loon Straits Soap Company three years ago. It was borne out of a desire to do what she could for the ailing health of Lake Winnipeg. Her father is a commercial fisherman, as was her grandfather and his father before him, so her roots run deep along the shores of Lake Winnipeg. Sharon speaks more of this:

"I became more aware of the amount of chemicals in our bath & cleaning products and felt that I needed to do something to try to stop the flow of such harmful substances into our Lake. I began researching the art of soapmaking, and soon discovered how wonderful it was to create beautiful all natural bath products that were great for the skin and the environment! I began using the herbs and flowers in my soaps that I was already growing in my gardens here in the country, and then began exploring the fields around my home, and around my parents' home at Loon Straits, finding amazing herbs and flowers to wildcraft and infuse in my soaps, salves, balms, & salts. I had no idea how much the Earth provides for us for our own healing until I began this journey.

Now I make a wide range of all natural soaps, several different healing salves, bath salts, lip balms, linen waters, creams, and even laundry soap! All are free of added chemicals & preservatives and contain no phosphates. This endeavor has become my passion - one that I want to share with everyone I meet. A portion of my profits are donated to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation - an organization dedicated to improving the health of Lake Winnipeg.

You can find me at Pineridge Hollow Farmers' Market in the summer, as well as some of the Christmas craft sales in the winter. I am hoping to launch my website in the next month or so, from which customers can purchase my products on line. Annual Spring Sale at the Red River Exhibition Hall is Looking For Vendors

This year's Annual Spring Sale at the Red River Exhibition Hall at the Assiniboia Downs will be held March 30-31, 2012 (Friday 10am – 8pm and Saturday 10am-8pm).

Paula Mohsen of Soko, the company arranging this sale, has told me that it will be a very fun sale. "It is going to be a great show with a different twist. We are really promoting the vendors at the exhibition by doing a treasure hunt and sending the public to different vendor’s booths. As well, the door prizes are gift certificates to spend at the show and we are having entertainment for children and adults as well. We want this to be focused on the vendors themselves. So many shows focus on selling the booths, but we really are hoping to highlight each vendor. We are also allowing people to share a booth so as to benefit the mom and pop crafters who may not be necessarily afford the cost of the booth."

I didn't make it to the Manitoba Craft Council one but my girl and I did make it to the Vineyard sale. It was two floors of awesomeness. We just buzzed through because my 4 1/2 yr old wanted to go to Chapters for a date but collected lots of cards of potential buys, picked up some chocolate tree ornaments again from Decadence Chocolate because they were such a hit with the kids last year, some treats from the $1 baked table, and a couple art magnets from Wendy Lee. The cards I took were mostly for items for me so I will visit them again after Christmas since this is a time for giving. ;)

Splendor By Connie Schroeder

Connie Schroeder grew up on a farm just east of Inglis, MB. Several years ago she started Splendor where she creates handmade, high end costume jewelry. The materials she uses are copper and brass, semi-precious stone, fresh water pearls, crystal and glass.

Connie is not local now. She married an American gent and is now living in Greendale, WI. Even though she lives in Wisconsin she is a Canadian prairie girl at heart and still visits Inglis in the summers so I thought it would be just fine to talk about her here. ;) Her prairie love of big open sky and the rolling hills of the parkland region has helped to form her aesthetic.

Craft Sale Cancellations and Current Information Updates

I had an email from the promoter of the Selkirk Snowflake Craft Sale and she said that the show had been cancelled and many people went to it this weekend and were disappointed that there was nothing going on. They said they read it about it on my blog. I was told a couple of months ago by a crafter, and one of my readers, that it was cancelled and I removed it from my page then. I find it a little strange that many people showed up there and I haven't had it posted for weeks so I am thinking they may have read it somewhere else and may be mixing it up. I just want to remind my readers to check back here often to see if there are any changes. I try to keep on top of things and if you know of any craft sales no longer on, please email me. Also, a reminder that there are a couple Facebook pages about local crafters. I like reading them but I am not affiliated with them. ;)

In Plain View's Self Guided Tours are coming up quick again. It is time to start getting excited about viewing original art in the setting in which it is made. :) You have the opportunity to visit artists in their studios and galleries throughout the city. Each artist offers you a peek into their world where you will experience art in many medias including paintings, ceramics, sculpture, water colour, print making, glass art, jewelry making, wearable art and more. There will be an abundance of creative original art work that will be on exhibit for show and sale.

"Kids Beginner Class" - (Tuesday October 4,11,18 & 25, from 7-9p.m) - In this 4 week intro to sewing for kids your child will learn the basics of using a sewing machine, cutting and marking skills as well as following a pattern to make a simple project. We will also spend some time talking about safety in the sewing room. The instructor is Alesha Frederickson and the investment is $120.

"Skirt Drafting Mega Course" -(Wednesday October 5- December 7 from 7-9 p.m ) - In the first half of this 10 week course you will learn how to measure for and draft a custom slopper which you will then use to create a custom fitted muslin. In the second half of the course you will learn about using your slopper to design and draft an endless variety of skirt options.We will also cover waistbands, zippers, pockets and hems...this is a serious amount of information here.Don't worry if you don't know the lingo...you will know all by the end of this course.The instructors are Melanie Wesley & Alesha Frederickson and the investment is $250.

"Paper bag Princess" - mini workshop-( October 8 from 7-9 p.m) - In this one day workshop you will learn to measure and cut your fabric to create a simple, elastic waist skirt. The instructor is Alesha Frederickson and the investment is $30.

"Circle Skirt" - workshop (October 15 & 22 from 1 -3 p.m) - In this 2 day workshop you will learn to draft and sew a basic full circle skirt with waistband and zipper. Some prior sewing experience is required.The instutors are Melanie Wesley & Alesha Frederickson and the investment is $60.

Local Crafter Is Being Featured at Nuit Blanche at The Manitoba Museum

Winnipeg's Embroidery Artist Susana of Lemon Dear will be participating in Nuit Blanche at the Manitoba Museum Saturday, October 1, 2011 (9:00 PM - 11:00 PM). Nuit Blanche is a Mad Men inspired (and free) party that includes Susana's Ella Stitchgerald embroidery exhibit and demonstration that is inspired by Ella Fitzgerald and other shining stars of the 60s.

"An illustration of Ella Fitzgerald, based on a photograph taken by William P. Gottlieb will be transferred to fabric and turned into an embroidery portrait. Guests are encouraged to approach the artist as she embroiders in order to learn some basic embroidery techniques and witness the process of turning fabric and thread into a portrait of the first lady of song.

Guests will also be able to see embroidered portraits of some of the most iconic personalities of the 60s. The exhibit features embroidery portraits of, among other figures, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie O and Twiggy

Hope you all had a fabulous summer with the wonderful heat and no mosquitoes. I am hoping that we will have a nice, warm, long Fall again like last year. It makes winter oh so more bearable. Along with the cold and snow another great phenomena happens at the end of Fall and the start of Winter.....Craft Sale Season.

It looks like the planning is in full gear for Fall and Winter craft sales. I have had a dozen people emailing me with info about their sales and you can find them along the right side of my blog. If you are looking to sell your awesome crafts have a peak at the sales that are up and coming and let me know about where you will be too and what you will be selling. I will be sure to do a write up on you. :) If I were you I would hop on it sooner then later because I know tables fill up pretty fast.

Exchange District Revisited

I spontaneously took the kiddos to the Museum of Man & Nature today. We were heading to the park and then turned the other way to catch a bus downtown. It felt like a day of exploration. ;) After the museum we followed the music to Market Square and had some delicious and very bad for me vegetarian poutine from Smoke's Poutinerie while listening to a musician playing some classic hits. After that we of course ended up at Cake-ology for a chocolate imperial cookie and peanut butter and chocolate cupcake. The imperial cookie was all chocolate with chocolate ganache inside and blue icing. It was $1.50. For 3 imperial cookies and a cupcake it was just over $8. Why are all the bakeries so much more money??
After we were full of fat, salt, and sugar we walked down Arthur for a play at Toad Hall Toys which happens to be my favourite toy store. :) We are home an lazy now and I was checking my Facebook and my status quote from last year was that I visited the museum with the kidlets and then visited Cake-ology. I am guessing it wasn't spontaneous...it seems to be in the cards that August 30th is reserved for Museum and cupcakes and my subconscious makes sure I get there somehow. ;)

Needlefelting Workshop and Wild & Woolly Fibre Festival in Neepawa

Fibre artist Linda Glowacki is teaching her "Painting with Fleece" needlefelting workshop on Saturday August 13, 1- 3:30, at the Wild and Woolly Fibre Festival in Neepawa. This Festival is part of the Manitoba Sheep Association's annual weekend show and sale. Explore texture, colour and design in a whole new way through the art of needlefelting. Your new skills can be used to decorate clothing and accessories, to embellish quilts, and to create your own unique fibre art.

Hi Folks. You may have noticed my writing petering out over the last month or so. Life seems to get pretty busy around Spring and Summer and life seems to move away from the computer. :) Summer is here and I will be taking a writing break. I will still write if I am heading to a craft sale, if someone emails me wanting to be on the blog, or if I see anything else that NEEDS to be written about. Otherwise I am hoping to be out enjoying what Canada has to offer us. If you email and do not hear back for a bit don't fret I will get back to you as soon as I can. Hi Folks. I just wanted to do a post on who I am and who I am not. My name is Jenn. I live in Wolseley. I have 2 little ones and a fabulous hubby. I like to write and I love my community. I actually do not craft....other than a little not so good sewing. :)

I have had a few people thinking I am Olivia from a brand new crafters list publication venture and Facebook page called Handmade In Manitoba. I wrote about her new venture in an earlier post. I just want all my readers and crafters whom I write about to know that I do this to help my community and because I like writing. I do not have a business nor will I ever ask for money for advertising or reviews or give any information to anyone wanting to make money off the artisans I write about. My mission is to get everyone to quit shopping at box stores for every little thing because there is so many awesome local artisans and artists. Ideally I would like everyone to eat at local restaurants, buy food from local farmers and shops, and buy all they can locally. Even supporting a small local store who sells worldly items is better than supporting the large box stores.

I also have nothing against any of the new writers talking about local crafters. I would love it if 100 people were because then that would mean that our local community is getting tighter and tighter. The more free publicity the better. I don't even have a problem with anyone making it a paid job to advertise local crafters. Really, publicity is publicity but I just don't want anyone to think I have ulterior motives. I am not connected with anyone. It is just me. :)

Stella's Bakery Super Yummy Treats & Crafty Minions Likes

I have been looking for local brioche and I found it today at Stella's Bakery along with a loaf of marble rye. I love living in Wolseley where it seems nearly everything is a bike ride away. They have a showcase of all their delicious slices, cookies, and muffins and the window is filled with rustic looking loaves. I bake bread in the winter but why do I when I have Stella's and Tall Grass minutes away? I guess I am preparing in case we lose our mind and move to the suburbs. ;)

I hope you are all having a great weekend! I have had a fantastic weekend. Firstly, the rain has pretty much stayed away. Secondly, I went to three church rummage sales yesterday sans kids. Thirdly, I was the first person to walk into the Crafty Minions sale. :) I did buy my shirt from Lady Tees and ordered 2 more. I bought Li (my girl) 3 pairs of earrings from Midkid: apples, birds, and hearts. I also found a great vintage shirt for Li from Marathon 1981 or I should say her new Etsy shop named The Young Team, and a set of melmac plates for my deck from Bitchin' Kitsch'N'Kitchen. Definitely a successful day.

This afternoon we biked to Stella's for bread and to Olmand's Creek to see if the lake has receded (it hasn't). Tonight, once our little mini ones are asleep, we get to sit on our deck and listen to the U2 concert. :) We have been hearing them practice and sound checks already. Not a bad weekend I'd say. I like that the handmade community is taking off. The internet is such an awesome tool for finding and selling handmade things. Pretty soon I will be obsolete since people love talking about our local treasures. :)

There is also a site that has started a pledge for those pumped about handmade things to only buy handmade goods for themselves and others and to also request to get only handmade gifts. Along with the pledge everyone that has been commenting seems to have an Etsy site. It may not be all local but if you can't find it in Manitoba I think it is still better to buy handmade off Etsy than shop for box store crud. To learn more check it out here:

I am getting ahead of the game but I love planning so I tend to go to craft sales with a shopping list. :) I really need some summer shirts so I am glad that Lady Tees will be there again. I bought one long sleeve in December but I think I need tanks and short sleeves now. I am also going to head to Marathon 1981 because she has such cute vintage kids clothes along with her great handmade items. I got this little red sailor jacket from her last time. The cutie is my niece. ;) Lastly I need to pick up a couple more pairs of earrings for my little girl from Midkid. I bought her the cutest little roses at the last sale so I am going to snag a couple more pairs. Maybe these cute little apples.

I had a very lazy day yesterday because I have a bit of a cold and was feeling lousy. When I have time to play with I like to peak through the W.E.S.T. site to see what they are talking about lately and who is new to the group. It is like a blog I follow. :) I was drawn to Carla Dyck's photography. I love photography. I dabble with it a bit as most people do but Carla has the talent and the eye. Wow. The Spring Trend is Definitely Feathers

Over the last year I have seen more and more feathers around. My friend Christy is getting married this summer and the only dress code is feathers. :) Around Christmas I bought a beautiful peacock feather headband at the R.Steen Craft Sale and I love it. My friend was wearing a feather earring this weekend and it reminded me of Branches and Feathers. If you are looking for feathers it will not be hard to find. I know there are a couple other crafters using feathers on W.E.S.T. lately so peruse there before you hunt the stores. This is what Branches and Feathers says of her creations:

Olivia contacted me a couple of weeks ago because her new publication, The Handmade In Manitoba Directory, is obviously very similar to the name of my blog. We are not affiliated at all but she is starting a business promoting local crafters so I of course would like to give her any support I can. My Choice For Mother's Day Supper: Boon Burger & Zax

I love living where I do. It is just a short distance from so much delicious food choices. Today I didn't have to cook all day. My Hubby made breakfast and lunch. My request for supper was Boon Burger's Thanksgiving Burger and french fries from Zax Drive Inn. Boon has quite the following already so I probably do not have to go into too much details for them. Boon Burger specializes in delicious vegan burgers. My choice today had yams and cranberry sauce on top and gravy to dip it in. It was of course super and very different than most veggie burgers. The burger itself was light and soft.

Zax Drive Inn used to be Wall Street Drive Inn and before that Burger Factory. It is actually about as opposite as you can get to Boon Burger. It can be described in two words meat and fried. With that said....they make the best fresh cut fries in town. I know fries because being a vegetarian it is often the only thing I can get at fast food places. :) Zax's are not soggy like most fresh cut fries are. They are crispy and soft on the inside. They must have their oil at the perfect temperature. Doused with vinegar they are awesome paired with my healthier burger choice. :) Boon has fries too and they are healthier and yummy too but I had been craving a little grease all week. My hubby is a meat eater so he had a burger from Zax and they kids shared a milk shake too. It was an awesome meal with two varieties of comfort food. Thanks Wolseley. :)

One more thing new to Boon.....vegan soft serve ice cream. Next time I am in the area I am stopping in to give it a try.

My friend passed on the tip to check out Heart-Felt Yarn Wreaths. Once I did I realized that I had seen the name before...possibly on the Winnipeg Etsy Street Team and put it in my head as someone I'd have to check out in the near future. I had figured wreaths would be a good thing to talk about in November...not April but I was wrong. Her wreaths do not scream Christmas at all. They are bright and very Springy. This also makes sense that she will be at the Springs Church Craft Sale this weekend. Her wreaths are a must have for someplace in your home where you need a cheery focal point. We all have that needy wall that is calling out for something happy to fill it. :) Have a peak at her wreaths at the sale this weekend or online at her many internet stops.

Judy Tingley's Art in Glass and Tile

Judy Tingley creates beautiful mosaic art pieces. It seems that nearly everyone in my family has her mosaics in their homes in the form of mirrors, tables, and trivets, so it got my attention a while back. One piece she did a couple years ago of my cousin really impressed me and I realized then that this was no mere hobby but a passion and an art. She has such a range in her creations from beautiful detailed portraits in glass to a little peek here and there into the world around us and nature's little creatures. I am amazed at what can be done with broken pieces of glass and tiles. Here is what Judy says of her work:

"I began making mosaic about 10 years ago as a hobby and after retiring 5 years ago began making mosaic as a small business. I work mainly with stained glass but also with ceramic or slate tiles for outdoor pieces. I will also use found objects such as shells, stones and jewellery and build them into the mosaic.

I make home accent pieces such as coasters and trivets, picture frames, trays, mirrors, and and have recently begun to do glass mosaic portraits. I also do outdoor tables, bird baths, plant pot containers using outdoor ceramic or slate tile.

I mainly do commissioned work and am willing to try different challenges. I love working with the glass and experimenting with different colours to create interesting effects. I often am inspired by something I see and will take a picture and then do a mosaic of it. I like doing themed pieces and recently did a mirror with a nautical theme for a friend for her home at Lake of the Woods . This was really fun to make."

The Velvet Vixen Continues to Impress With Her Eco-Friendly Designs

I met with Sarah Jonasson of The Velvet Vixen at a sale last month and was totally impressed with how her fashion has evolved. She continues with the Nordic influences but has learned to work with new fabrics and fibers, with one being a very unusual one. She has found a way to use fish leather in her designs. I will let her explain it because if I hadn't seen it I would not have believed her. It looks similar to leather and has no fish smell....which I am sure every one of you was wondering about. :) It has beautiful texture do to the scales and it looks beautiful. She works with it in such a way that it blends perfectly with her beautiful Nordic wear and it brings it to a new level. It feels like art has been woven through the fish leather and blends into her other natural fabrics like bamboo, jersey, leather, and vintage pieces.

She unifies dichotomous styles between dark and edgy - to elegant and feminine, designing women's clothing and accessories.

One of her trademarks is designing with eco friendly fish leather, and she strives to be eco conscious whenever possible. For example, she offers the choice of Organic Bamboo fabrics when ordering her designs. Another Craft Sale Missed. :(

It seems Spring is not my time for craft sales. It was my 4 year old's birthday party today and it was busy with around 15 kids, games, crafts, and all that jazz. I also picked up cakette pops from Cake-ology for the kids' take home present. Yum! I probably could have made them by myself but why? There was enough work to be done so I took a tasty short cut. :) By 3pm, when the party was finally cleaned up, I was too tired to walk over to R.Steen Community Centre. I hope it was a success. Lilac Bakery Made Our Snack Time AWESOME!

The kids and I were heading to a friends for a playdate and I happened by Lilac Bakery and asked Li if we should pick up some treats for snack time. What nearly 4 year old would say no to that. :) Actually, I don't know very many women who would say no to that either. Definitely not I. I got the kids out of the car and all ran in with glee and excitement in our eyes at what treats we could get. ;) We divided inside. I went towards the cupcake counter while Li diverted for the other counter with the colourful slices. She was instantly drawn to the pink iced Dream Cake Slice. I, to the peanut butter iced chocolate cupcake. Joni, being a boy was much more interested in climbing on the window ledge. ;) He did seem interested in the peanut butter marshmallow slice that also happens to be my Grandma's specialty. We ended up with 2 cupcakes (Peanut Butter Chocolate and Cookies and Cream), the Dream Cake, and the Marshmallow Slice. I wish I had thought to take some photos of the box of treats so I could post them here. I have a few photos here from their website but not of what we had. :(

They all were all AWESOME. The Dream Cake was pretty and delicious too. It had a shortbread bottom with a cherry, nut, and coconut gooey center, and pink buttercream on top. My kids and friend went ape over the peanut butter marshmallow slice.

Lilac Bakery is definitely the place to go for slices. They had a huge selection of slices and a yummy selection of cupcakes too. I love having children and being able to use them as an excuse to go to bakeries. ;)

They are also participating in Ciao! Magazine's Chocolate Fest from April 1–30. Visit them and receive a slice of their Classic Chocolate Cake (moist dark chocolate cake covered with a decadent chocolate frosting) for $5.00.

Mary and Maude Studio's Whimsical Illustrations

I realized that I hadn't written about Mary and Maude Studio yet. I have seen the fantastic illustrations at many craft sales and still haven't wrote about them. I think Natasha's illustrations are fun and whimsical. They would fit perfectly in a nursery or your living room. They have some humor to them as well, similar to how all kid movies all have jokes for the parents to enjoy now. I was bragging about these I-Spy bags that I bought from a local crafter to a friend. She is heading to Washington DC with the whole family in their minivan. She thought the idea was great and wanted me to find her some asap. :) I log into my Gmail and who contacts me but a new to me crafter Rochelle's Craftnook who indeed makes I-Spy Bags which is good because I am unsure if my regular I-Spy bag crafter is still making them. Such a strange coincidence. Enough with the story...I am sure you want to know about Rochelle.

Flu Has Been Keeping Me Away

dconstruct Jewelry

My last post has brought to my thoughts a beautiful jewelry maker. I did a small post on it a year ago but I have been drooling over some of their resin bracelets lately so I thought perhaps it was time to do a full feature on them. :) dconstruct is local and their jewelry feels very organic and urban if that makes a lick of sense. The recycled resin makes them smooth and sleek. Very modern and then they use these organic images like this leaf. I really would like to know more about them and how they do it. It amazes me. Please look at all their other beautiful pieces. It was very hard to find two that I liked best out of their selection to feature here. They are more art than jewelry.

Skate Betty Upcycles Skateboards Into Jewelry

I love upcycled fashion. I find it interesting and such a good way to reuse something that would head to our landfills. I have featured quite a few upcyclers in the last year and a half but just only came across Sheena of Skate Betty. She upcycles used skateboards into bangles, pendants, and earrings. They are brightly coloured and totally urban. They will be soon be the new trend I am sure. Urban art and fashion is getting hotter and hotter. I recently bought a photograph off Etsy of a broom lying under a dirty staircase. I am so into what is lying in dark corners that no one notices. ;) The skateboard prints are still there but scraped and battered so it adds an edge to the bright coloured wood. Very cool.

I was peaking around at my followers profiles today and came across Babbs Boutique. Remember awhile back I did a feature on EmenGeeDesigns? Well Monica who co-runs the EmenGeeDesigns also has her own line of beautiful and custom made bridal clutches. They are truly le chique le cool! :) They can even compliment any bridesmaid dress. There is a time and a place for knits. I know we are in the coldest largest populated area in the world but knits do not have to just be for cold snowy days. Plum Coulee's Monthly Flea Market & Handmade Items

Plum Coulee has a monthly event called The Find. Here you can find hand crafted jewelry, vintage items, tools, homemade tortillas, handmade babywear, crocheted hats, purses, etc., magnetic jewelry, hand crafted child's stools, scrapbooking supplies, homemade cards, and much much more. They have a Facebook page with their upcoming dates and more information on the monthly sale. It is supposed to be a sunny weekend which is perfect for a Saturday morning drive out to the country. ;) It is around thirty-forty minutes past Morris which makes it around an hour and a quarter drive. I have this problem....I cannot let good fabric leave my house. I have remade old sweaters into cushions, my old clothes are reformed into my 4 yr old girl's clothes, and friends give me vintage clothes for me to store in my hope chest until I have need of them. I came across Oh So Retro and she seems to be on the same wave length as me. She transforms old fabrics into wallets, bags, and more. She even has a design your own tote where you make your choices for your perfect bag and she makes it. This is what she says about herself:

Local CSA Farm is Ready For This Year's Shareholders

I think an amazing thing about living in North America is that we have so many food choices. With this comes great responsibility...at least I think so. Along with shopping from local artisans and businesses I also try to buy local food whenever possible. An easy way to do that is to join a CSA Farm Share from a local (and preferable organic/transitional) farmer. It helps the farm to grow and the buyer gets awesome local goodies for months. :) Local organic farmers R.O.C. & the Fern Orchard and Gardens are accepting this years farm share holders. If you are interested in getting a box of fresh fruit and vegetables each week delivered to your door all summer long then get on it quick before all the spots are filled. Most farm shares are between $450-$600 a month but R.O.C & the Fern are still growing with this being their second farm share season so the cost is $350 for a summer and fall of delicious food picked right before you get it in your home. Also, because they are limiting shares to 30 they are doing home delivery so you do not even have to go weekly to a depot. You can't get it fresher or easier than this. How we grow it

We do not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. We do use organic seeds and, where possible, we plant Heritage varieties to provide a diverse selection of produce.

How our farm share works

Our 10 acre vegetable and berry farm is divided into a number of plots that are designated for various purposes. A portion of these plots are farm share gardens, while a few others are planted with fruit trees and seed stock for use next year. We also leave a couple of plots clear to facilitate rotating the garden; this helps with weed prevention — an important part of organic gardening — and rejuvenating soil nutrients.

Limited farm shares

We offer a limited number of shares (30) which allows us to focus on our farm.

Cost of a farm share

A share will cost $350.00 for the 2011 growing season and produce will be delivered for a 10 to 14 week period (as long as the plants are producing).

Payment and priority

A $50.00 deposit is required to secure a share. The remainder (payment in full) is due by May 15th, 2011.

Early receipt of payment is much appreciated; it helps us plan for the coming season. Your intention to purchase a farm share is secured by the $50.00 deposit. Your share is confirmed with your deposit. Should you change your mind, please let us know as soon as possible; others may be waiting to purchase a share.

Amount of produce

On average you will receive approximately 5-10 units per week. For example, a “unit” is: a quart of strawberries, a head of cabbage, one pound of tomatoes. This depends, of course, on the growing season and the yields of different plants.

All of the produce, from our farm share gardens, is distributed in weekly shares. Some weeks you may get more than other weeks and we cannot, due to the vagaries of Nature, guarantee you will receive any or all of the items listed above (as is the case with all CSAs).

Delivery and drop off locations

We currently deliver to Lowe Farm, Morris, Altona and to a few areas in Winnipeg (St. Vital, Wolseley and Whyte Ridge). We will consider making additional arrangements, however, there may be an additional charge for this. If you live outside of the areas mentioned, please contact us anyway; we’ll work together to accommodate you where possible. (Maybe you’re on the way.)

Creativi-Tea Is Coming This Sunday

I have been on the hunt for local clothing designers and I came across Andreanne's beautiful bamboo clothes. They look beautiful and are also made by eco-friendly fabrics. This is what she says about her clothes and design history.

"Voilà par/by Andréanne is one of Canada's up and coming Aboriginal clothing design companies that offers eco-friendly, fair trade clothing made in Canada. From the initial sketch to pattern making, cutting and sewing, everything is produced in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Andréanne is a creative Métis designer who studied international design at Montréal's prestigious LaSalle College, receiving her diploma in Fashion Design in 2004. Sling Sister's New Snack Bags Take Over Need for Plastic Sandwich Bags

I have been looking for a solution to eliminate the need for sandwich bags or "ziplocks". I don't use a lot of plastic bags but I do end up using quite a few plastic sandwich bags. I have been buying the more eco friendly ones from Eat It but waste is still waste. Sling Sister now has added these washable snack bags in three sizes. My kids have already taken over the two small ones they sent. I think Li's has a little santa and a few small toys in it. ;) I have been using Tupperware sandwich boxes for traveling snacks because they are not made with any poisonous plastics and are easily washed. They work fine if I am bringing my big bag. If we are just heading out for a couple hours I like to just have a sandwich bag with some dried fruit or cheese and crackers stuffed in a pocket. Sling Sisters also have a lunch sized bag for a days worth of snacks and drinks. :)

My four year old daughter also has some small toys that have a million tiny pieces like little polly pocket sized dolls. I use sandwich bags for these, craft and art items, and many other things around the house. I am thinking I may end up ordering a few more of the medium size so that I can sew on a picture of what's inside and it will help me organize our art box and Li's small toys.

These sandwich bags are mini versions of their wet bags. They have the cute fabric on the outside, a waterproof inner layer and a zipper on top. The zipper does not allow it to be 100% waterproof but I have been using wet bags for years for bathing suits and diapers and nothing has come out that I wanted to stay inside. ;)

Lori, one of the Sling Sister's also told me that many schools have been using these snack bags as a fundraisers. It would make a great fundraiser because it is locally made, not overly expensive, and everyone would have a use for them. Perhaps your child's class or another group would be interested in something new to help your fundraising event. Email them if you would like more information.

Even if the snow is still on the ground the craft and arts sales and teas are popping up like the first tulips of Spring. This is the perfect time to participate in one of these events because we are all dying to get out. The end of winter is S T R E T C H I N G on and we need an event to look forward too.

The Creativi-Tea is coming up pretty quick and they still have tables available for local artists, artisans, and crafters. The cost of a table is $15 in support of The Canadian Cancer Society (tables are provided).

Wandering Thread Fibre Art

Joy Eidse was one of the first artists I featured at the start of this blog. I was blown away by her amazing fibre art quilts. I could imagine every one in a room in my house. The winter craft seasoned showed me another side of her. She had many smaller quilts and framed quilts. All unique and beautifully crafted. My Grandma was an avid quilter. We have a large family and everyone had at least one quilt made by her. I now have inherited a couple of her earlier quilts and I love seeing the before and after. Who she was when she started and who she was as a quilter at the end of her life. One of my favourites is a hanging quilt that she made for my Mom. My Mom collected dolls from around the world and she made an embroidered quilt of girls/dolls from around the world. It is so nice and I am sure that it took hours of time to make. It is now in my daughter's room. I always loved quilts but know that I am not a very good pattern follower and I also get bored with any sewing job that takes more than an evening. I hadn't thought there was any other way to quilt until I saw Joy's art. She is very inspiring and creative. This is her bio that I snagged from her webpage. I love knowing who the person is behind the craft.

"I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl but could never follow a pattern. I was happiest embroidering patterns I had designed or adding patches to clothing. I’d never considered quilting as an art form I might be interested in because I had only ever seen traditional quilts with exact patterns that required measuring and straight lines. When I discovered art quilting, a whole new world opened up for me. I could fully engage in the “right brained” creative process without having to interrupt it with “left brained” mathematics and if something wasn’t quite straight or perfect I could just say it was intentional since it was my design!

I love the freedom of this art form and it’s accessibility as a mother of young children. I can do it on the kitchen table while they play or in the backyard. It feeds my creative urges while allowing me to be present for my kids. During the long winter months here in Winnipeg, quilting is a ‘warm’ activity. As wallhangings, they allow me to add the warmth of colour to my home while insulating my walls from the cold winds (who says art quilts are not functional!).

As a social worker, I am interested in the communal history of quilting, the quilting bee as a social change mechanism, (it was a crucial part of the women’s liberation movement) and it’s potential for community development and community expression. I am beginning to explore the concept of art as part of a healing for both individuals and communities, particularly in the area of grief. Art as a means of making social and political statements and the power of symbol is also something that fascinates me and something I hope to study and practice more in this next year."

Family Fun in Winnipeg's Exchange District

This afternoon my hubby and I took the kids for a family fun day in The Exchange District and we had a great time. We parked on Arthur and played and shopped at Toad Hall Toys for an hour, went to The Line Up for an early supper, and then stopped in for cakettes at Cake-ology. Toad Hall Toys is obviously the best toy store in Winnipeg with such a great selection of everything. I could spend thousands of dollars there and I am in my 30's so imagine what a kid could do with a full wallet. ;) We ended up getting birthday gifts for three friends and found some birthday ideas for us too.

I actually haven't been to The Line Up for years but it was a great place for kids. We got pizzas, fries, and my hubby got some pita thingy. The food was all good, especially the pizza crust. The prices were great and the service was super good. My pizza had a bit of burnt part on it and they had a new pizza cooking before they even brought out the first pizza to me. Now I got left overs for tomorrow. ;)

I have reviewed Cake-ology before but I don't think that I have been there since my last post. We stopped in after supper to take home a few cakettes for dessert and a red velvet cupcake to share tomorrow at snack time. I like Cake-ology because it is timeless. It feels like a little shop that could have existed at any time over the last hundred years.   Their cream cheese icing is worth the trip and I have so many friends that crave their little chocolate cakettes. I cannot wait to eat my 1/2 of the cupcake tomorrow afternoon. I am sure I will dream of it tonight.

I know that many people are scared of downtown Winnipeg. There may be a few scruffy people here or there but I find The Exchange District is such an adventure for all ages. We got to visit three local businesses today in a community with beautiful character buildings and we didn't have to walk more than a block.   I am so glad that I live in central Winnipeg. There is so much good stuff here. :)

Local Upcycler Is Heading To Toronto's One of a Kind Show

Hi Everyone. There is a fairly new Facebook group called Winnipeg Workshops and it is a great resource for looking for workshops for all sorts of stuff. In the past I have looked to the Leisure Guide to find classes to take but the classes fill up fast and the selection is pretty slim. Winnipeg Workshops features workshops an anything and they are open for new classes anytime. Have a peak and see if anything floats your boat or if you have a talent that you would like to share with the world perhaps hosting a workshop would be a good idea.

While visiting the holiday craft sales I came across Lady T.Tees at two back to back sales. I actually just got her info from the Crafty Minions Sale at Aqua Books and then caved and bought one for myself the following night at the This Ain't Your Grandma's Craft Sale. The shirt fits great and the art on the shirts are all hand-printed with original drawings by Tamara Rae Biebrich. She has a blog with many of her designs. Have a peak:

I think I may get a couple other shirts in the near future because I love the one with the woman on the bike and a swimming ladies one that I came across at the sales. The designs are very retro!

Another artisan that I loved over the holidays was Alexandra Tumanov who creates beautiful jewelry under the name Tumanov Regalia. I am a closet jewelry collector. I actually rarely buy now or wear them since I have had children but I have a 4 drawer jewelry box filled with classic, unique, and costume jewelry. I especially love turquoise. Absolutely love it. Midkid's Art & Craft

I have finally starting digging out my cards from December's craft sales. I am still on the hunt for a few because I am sure I had a handful and now I have three. Midkid is one of the crafters that I liked. Midkid is a collection of art&craft by Cara. Her Facebook page has a good bio on her and photos of her work so this will be an very easy entry for me today. A perfect way to kick off my first feature in 2011. :) I love this babywearing pendant. Nothing is hotter than a guy with a baby in sling. Have a peak at her bio and the photos below.

"The name "midkid" is inspired by Cara's life. Much like every piece that comes from the label. Cara is a middle child, sandwiched inbetween two brothers capable of mastering any sport. Cara's love for art started at a young age when she started coloring on everything from paper, to walls, to her baby brother. When her clumsiness prevented her from being an allstar like her brothers she found star like qualities in her art.

With that "midkid" was created. Still looking to be that all star, Cara trys to make art&craft in many forms. Currently "midkid" is compiled of paintings, jewellery, photography, murals, and pretty much anything else you can imagine.

I have had a very nice lazy holiday. I do have quite a few artisans to feature this winter so keep checking back here. Learn to Spin!

Taught by Joanne Seiff*

Handspinning with a spindle is an ancient craft that is still important even today. Everyone in a household, including children as young as four, used to help spin yarn that clothed the family and kept them warm! Join Joanne and learn a bit about wool and learn to use a handspindle to make your own yarn. When you leave this class, you’ll own a spindle, some practice wool, and you’ll be able to practice spinning at home.

Note: This class is all you’ll need to begin spinning. It’s also a great introduction to the skills you’ll need if you decide to learn to spin on a spinning wheel.

When: February 13^th from 1:30-4:30 pm

Susan Hiebert makes beautiful kids tables and chairs, toy boxes, growth charts, glass block lamps, and much more. She works out of Portage La Prairie and her business is called Something Crafty. I was happy that she fell into my lap because there are very few crafters that make furniture. I think I have only featured a few over the last year. I know I said I was tuckered out with craft sales but I know many of you probably are not the early shopper that I am. If you have a list that you are checking twice I am sure you will see some gaps you are trying to fill. Craft sales are a great place to find that perfect gift for the hard to buy person, baking for your Christmas events, Christmas and other holiday cards, or even just a warm pair of socks or a scarf to keep you warm over the winter. Crystal Nykoluk Ceramics Art Show and Sale

Crystal Nykoluk graduated in 2008 from the University of Manitoba Fine Arts Department with an Honors Degree in Ceramics. Her ceramics have a cozy earthy feel because she finds inspiration in nature. Each piece is functional and very much a work of art. Crystal is having an art show and sale on December 19th, 2010 at 741 McMillan from 2pm-8pm. It will be a very cozy atmosphere to showcase all her ceramic art. Along with Crystal and her art, Michael Cann & Kurt Wood will be found playing some music for the shoppers. "I build all my work using soft slabs of clay and also sometimes using molds. I really enjoy making abstract textures using clay, and I incorporate this element into all my work as well. No two objects I make are ever identical! I get much inspiration from simply observing the world as I go through it. The way frost plays out on a window, the grain of wood as it runs around knots in a tree, cracked soil, and broken rock. My work is wood-fired. To be able to wood-fire I depend on the generosity of friends who have wood-burning kilns. I also fire in a small electric kiln out at my studio in Anola Manitoba.

I really believe that you get out of life what you put into it. A life surrounded by handmade objects is a way of soothing the soul and satisfying your right to be individual. We need to show the world we care about what we own. We care where it comes from and we care about ourselves!"

Busy Weekend For Cool Craft

I did get to the Crafty Minions and This Ain't Your Grandma's Craft Sale this weekend. Both were good and unique in their own ways. I didn't buy much but I did grab a few cards for later purchases. I ended up getting vintage goodies at the Crafty Minions and tonight at the Park Theatre I bought a t-shirt. I think I have been to a few too many craft sales this year because I have seen a lot of repeat crafters/artisans. :) I am sure that I see some artisans more than most of my friends and family (Marathon 1981 and Just The Goods forsure). I now need to work on my neglected relationships so I am done for craft sales for 2010. I have many crafters to write about in the future so keep a peak here now and then. I am not dying here just hanging up my shopping bag for a while. :)

I will also keep posting about sales if anyone emails me about ones I have missed and I am always glad to post about a new or old artisan so keep emailing me your details to handmadeinmanitoba@gmail.com.
